The Safari Humidor Review

The Safari Humidor – A Review

After purchasing my second mass-produced Chinese pressboard humidor, and yet again being disgusted with the results and its inability to hold humidity, I thought that a humidor built from hardwood would be the way to go.  A few Google searches turned up Lance Allen’s website and I decided to drop him a line in December 2014, and see what his creativity could produce.  Lance responded very quickly and thus began a business relationship that would result in the one of the most beautiful humidors that I have ever seen, produced with true craftsmanship and attention to detail, by a true American craftsman.

Absolutely stunning exterior and the box joints enhance the look

To be fair, I wasn’t easy on Lance.  I had significant demands on what I wanted, given the investment.  But Lance took everything in stride, meticulously designing the humidor and offering me options to choose from.  One of the best parts about working with Lance was the regular email updates that included a photo of the current status of the project.  I was able to watch the humidor come together as if I were building it myself.  And the final results couldn’t have been better.  In less than 2 months Lance produced the beauty you see depicted in the pictures.  The finished product is a 15L x 10D x 7H humidor with a Zebrawood exterior and gloss lacquer coating.  The interior cedar is ¼ inch thick (to deal with dry desert air) and the humidor has two independent trays that lift out.  Lance’s craftsmanship really showed through when he used the extra Zebrawood to make the edges of the trays as well as the ledges on which the trays rest.

The humidor also has recessed side handles and a mortised key lock (I added the paracord tassel to enhance the Safari theme).  After about a month of ownership, I am happy to say that the humidor still maintains the humidity level perfectly between 69-73% RH (depending on how moist the humidification devices are).

I cannot recommend Lance Allen Humidors enough for your custom project.  His craftsmanship and attention to detail are unparalleled.  This guy can really build a humidor!
